Osteoporosis is often referred to as a “silent disease” because it can develop without any apparent symptoms until a fracture occurs. Bone densitometry plays a crucial role in the early detection of this disease. It quantifies bone mineral density (BMD) and compares it with the normal values for the population of the same age and sex, making it possible to diagnose osteoporosis or osteopenia (a less severe reduction in bone density than osteoporosis).

As well as measuring BMD, bone densitometry can be used to assess the risk of fracture. A drop in bone density is directly linked to an increased risk of fractures, particularly of the vertebrae, hip or wrist. Being aware of this risk enables healthcare professionals to recommend appropriate measures to prevent fractures, particularly in the elderly.

Bone densitometry is also a tool for raising awareness. Knowing your BMD can encourage people to adopt a bone-healthy lifestyle, such as a balanced diet that is rich in calcium and vitamin D, regular physical activity and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol consumption.

At a time when the population is living longer and osteoporosis-related fractures can have serious consequences for quality of life, the importance of bone densitometry cannot be underestimated.
